In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." I had knee, shin, lower back issues, and hated to run several years back. I didn't know you needed to change your running shoes more frequent than I had been accustomed to being in the military (no one tells you these things, they just want you to run 2 miles as fast as you can). I also didn't know about getting fitted for shoes. I went to a running shoe specialist store in Austin, TX. they recommended the Fortitude as I am something of a "Clydesdale". I love running ever since. All those pains were gone almost immediately and the shoe was perfect for me. I've since experimented with several other shoes, Asics 2150s, Asics Kayanos, Saucony Omni 8 and 9. This was first time ordering the Fortitudes in several years, I thought I'd try them again. And Yes, they are still the best feeling for my feet. I now run upwards of 20 miles for long runs, and these are by far more comfortable on these longs runs than my current shoes Saucony Omni 9 (nothing wrong with these, just not as much spring or noticeable stability). Upper mesh are light and not as binding as the 2150s. From what I remembered about the Kayano, the midsole striking was harsh and tended to make my foot drag not making my stride efficient. this is just me though.

Great Shoe for heavier and large footed individuals. My husband is over 6" and well over 200 lbs. and he has tried running shoes ranging from $75 to $200 per pair. After searching high and low he now swears by the gel fortitude. He has flat feet with severe underpronation and has run full marathons in the shoes with no issues. Not to mention no flaring of his itbs syndrome.

Im just over 300lbs and required a wide comfortable shoe to help me get into habit of walking and getting fitter. Enter the GEL-Fortitude 4 Running Shoe, these shoes are very comfortable to walk in. The GEL-Fortitude 4 Running Shoe are extremely light (unlike me) and also provide an excellent shock absorption for my heels while walking. The GEL-Fortitude 4 Running Shoe are quite airy and provide some breathing for your feet while plodding along. Top shoes at a great price.
